Local Man Launches Outreach Initiative to Support Lonely Individuals After Losing Friend to Suicide

The "Empty Chairs" campaign has been making its way across the country, spreading a message of hope and connection for those who need it most. The initiative, started by a 30-year-old man after his best friend tragically died by suicide, aims to provide a safe space for people to sit together and talk.

Dean Perryman, the founder of the campaign, came up with the idea after his friend Rob Clancy passed away at the age of 29. Wanting to ensure that no one else felt alone, Perryman began wearing a bright orange hoodie to pubs and restaurants, inviting strangers to sit with him. Just a few weeks ago, he held his program's 1000th meet-up in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, featuring about 12 attendees.

Perryman says the experience has been incredible, allowing him to connect with people from all walks of life. "It has been such an incredible experience," he said. "I am loving every second of it still." The events have been held in various locations across the UK and even internationally, with Perryman recruiting volunteers to host them.

The "Empty Chairs" campaign has also created a sense of community, with many attendees returning to the events and forming lasting friendships. Perryman said his favorite part is seeing men open up about their troubles, providing a safe space for them to do so. "Some people come because they really want someone to listen to what they have to say," he said.

Perryman has about 200 more events lined up and shows no signs of stopping. "We have everyone — men, women, young, old," he said. "There really isn’t a barrier to entry for this. Whoever needs the space is welcome to come." His goal is to create a lasting legacy for his best friend Rob, providing a space for people to connect and share their stories.

The campaign's impact is undeniable, offering a message of hope and connection for those who need it most. As Perryman continues to spread the word, it's clear that his efforts will make a lasting difference in the lives of those who participate.
