A wave of terror swept through Long Island last week, culminating in the senseless deaths of two women, leaving behind shattered families and a community grappling with shock.
Rony Yahir Alvarenga Rivera, 22, now faces murder charges in connection with the brutal killings of Ana Maria del Aguila-Cordova, 42, and his roommate, whose identity has been released by authorities. The events unfolded with chilling speed and a disturbing lack of apparent motive beyond pure, unadulterated rage.
The first tragedy occurred just after midnight at a Wendy’s restaurant on Austin Boulevard in Island Park. Aguila-Cordova, a dedicated employee and mother of two, was taking out the trash when she was attacked and fatally stabbed.
Remarkably, after the attack, Rivera allegedly contacted the police himself, confessing to the crime. Officers were then directed to a location in Lynbrook where Rivera waited for them, repeating his chilling admission.
Aguila-Cordova, a resident of Long Beach, is survived by her two young children, ages eight and one. The loss has cast a dark shadow over their lives, and the community is rallying to support them in this unimaginable time of grief.
The horror didn’t end there. Hours later, shortly after 3:00 A.M., police discovered the body of Rivera’s roommate at her home in Valley Stream. Investigators believe she was murdered the previous night, around 9:00 P.M., also suffering multiple stab wounds.
Law enforcement officials described the crime scenes as indicative of a man consumed by fury. Both women were victims of repeated, violent attacks to the neck and torso, painting a gruesome picture of the events.
Detectives have offered little insight into a specific trigger for the violence, stating simply that “anger” appears to be the driving force behind these horrific acts. The full extent of the events leading up to the murders remains under investigation.
Authorities have revealed that Rivera entered the United States illegally from El Salvador in 2016, when he was just 12 years old. This detail has emerged as investigators piece together his background and history.
