COFFEE SHOP CHAOS: Crack Den SHUTDOWN – 17 BUSTED!

COFFEE SHOP CHAOS: Crack Den SHUTDOWN – 17 BUSTED!

A seemingly ordinary coffee shop in Philadelphia masked a decade-long reign of terror, authorities revealed Sunday. “Operation Cocaine and Coffee” culminated in the dismantling of a major drug ring, exposing a criminal enterprise deeply rooted in the city’s streets.

Cumberland Coffee and Snacks, the unassuming storefront at the heart of the operation, concealed a sinister secret. Above the shop, investigators discovered a sophisticated crack cocaine processing and packaging facility, fueling a network of street-level distribution.

The takedown ensnared 17 individuals, many of whom weren’t young upstarts, but seasoned criminals entrenched in the drug trade for years. Leading the organization was 56-year-old Lewis Alexander, now facing serious charges and a hefty $750,000 bail.

Attorney General Dave Sunday described the group’s impact as “absolute harm” to the North Philadelphia community, linking their activities to a surge in violent crime. For residents, the organization represented a constant threat, a shadow looming over everyday life.

The investigation wasn’t confined to the coffee shop. Authorities executed warrants at approximately 30 locations spanning Philadelphia, Delaware County, and even extending into New Jersey, revealing the breadth of the operation’s reach.

The organization had stubbornly persisted, likened to “weeds” that choked the neighborhood despite changing residents and attempts at revitalization. It had become a deeply ingrained blight, extending its influence through associated businesses like a nearby bar and barbershop.

The raid yielded a significant haul: 27 firearms, four pounds of cocaine, over 130 pounds of marijuana, and dangerous narcotics like fentanyl and ecstasy. Large sums of cash were also seized, representing the profits of their illicit trade.

Those arrested now face a multitude of felony charges, including operating a corrupt organization, drug trafficking, and illegal firearm possession. Sunday declared that Alexander’s organization now has a new “turf” – a correctional facility.

Many of the defendants are well into middle age and beyond, some in their 50s, 60s, and even 70s, demonstrating a chilling longevity in their criminal careers. Their capture marks a significant victory in the fight to reclaim the streets of North Philadelphia.
