RICE WAR: Government Unleashes 900 New Outlets—Is Your Family Ready?

RICE WAR: Government Unleashes 900 New Outlets—Is Your Family Ready?

A nationwide effort to deliver affordable rice to Filipino families is gaining momentum, with nearly 900 new distribution points set to open across the country. This expansion builds upon an existing program offering rice at a subsidized rate of 20 pesos per kilogram, a lifeline for those struggling with rising food costs.

The initiative focuses on reaching communities most in need, prioritizing areas like Capiz, Bukidnon, Cebu, Cotabato, and Catanduanes. These locations have been identified as facing significant challenges in accessing reasonably priced rice, a staple food for millions.

Fueling this expansion is a substantial 3-billion peso investment, part of a larger 10-billion peso “Rice for All” program. This funding secures approximately 1.8 million sacks of well-milled rice, ensuring a consistent supply for the expanded network of outlets.

Beyond simply lowering rice prices for consumers, the program also aims to bolster support for local farmers. A portion of the allocated funds will be dedicated to increasing the government’s procurement of *palay*, or unmilled rice, directly from agricultural producers.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel, Jr. emphasized the critical need for this expansion, acknowledging that while the nation’s food supply is adequate, escalating transportation and logistical expenses are driving up retail prices. This impacts household budgets across the Philippines.

Currently, the program operates through 932 existing outlets, including KADIWA stores, NFA warehouses, and partnerships with local governments and agencies. As of early April, over 6.45 million Filipinos have already benefited from the subsidized rice.

Eligibility for the program is carefully targeted to include vulnerable populations: senior citizens, families enrolled in the 4Ps program, solo parents, individuals with disabilities, and select farmers and fisherfolk. This ensures assistance reaches those who need it most.

Recognizing the challenges faced by working families, the program is also extending operating hours at these distribution sites. This crucial adjustment aims to maximize access to affordable rice, accommodating diverse schedules and ensuring no one is left behind.
