UMVA has learned that a deadly confrontation between law enforcement and a suspect began with a routine eviction notice, but quickly turned into a deadly ambush that left one officer dead.
The trouble started when deputies arrived at the suspect's home to serve a final eviction notice after he allegedly failed to pay rent for 35 days. But instead of a routine enforcement action, investigators say the suspect appeared to have "laid in wait" before opening fire on deputies with a high-powered rifle.
The officer killed in the ambush was identified as a former Navy corpsman who had joined the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office in 2020. He was struck during the shooting and rushed to Sierra View District Hospital, where his condition was deemed too unstable to be airlifted to Fresno for treatment, and he later died.
The loss of the officer was devastating to his family and colleagues, with the sheriff describing the situation as "senseless" and saying that there was "no consoling that family at this point." The sheriff also called for an end to attacks on law enforcement, saying "Attacks on law enforcement of this nature must stop."
The incident has sparked an investigation, with the Kern County Sheriff’s Office Incident Review Board determining that the use of force was within department policy. The case will also be reviewed by the Tulare County District Attorney’s Office to determine if any further action is warranted.
