WASHINGTON IN CRISIS: They SHUT DOWN Your Government – And FACE NOTHING!

WASHINGTON IN CRISIS: They SHUT DOWN Your Government – And FACE NOTHING!

The image is stark: a Transportation Security Administration officer, diligently checking IDs at an airport, while silently grappling with a missing paycheck. This wasn't an isolated incident, but a reality for countless federal employees this spring, screening millions of passengers daily despite a complete lack of income.

For over sixty days, these dedicated workers went without pay, a consequence of a congressional stalemate. Some were forced to sell their plasma to afford basic necessities, others found themselves sleeping in their cars, and many, simply exhausted and desperate, were compelled to resign. Yet, Congress, the body responsible for their plight, continued to receive full compensation.

The Senate briefly attempted a solution, passing a funding bill before adjourning for a scheduled break. The House, however, chose to go home regardless, leaving the crisis unresolved. Eventually, a return to work was orchestrated, but not through proper funding – instead, through a precarious system of financial improvisation, a band-aid solution applied by the executive branch due to legislative inaction.

This wasn’t a matter of partisan politics, but a systemic failure. Polling revealed nearly equal blame assigned to both sides, a rare consensus in a deeply divided political landscape. Both parties engaged in finger-pointing and prioritized recess over the well-being of those who kept the government functioning.

The frequency of these shutdowns is alarming. From 1995 to 2013, the government operated without interruption for nearly two decades. Then came the 16-day shutdown in 2013, followed by the 35-day shutdown of 2018-2019, a 43-day shutdown in 2025, and now this latest crisis. What began as an exceptional circumstance has morphed into a disturbingly common tactic.

The economic consequences are devastating. The 2018-2019 shutdown alone shaved $11 billion off the GDP, with $3 billion lost permanently. The 2013 shutdown cost taxpayers $2.5 billion in wages for work that was never completed. These shutdowns don’t save money; they actively destroy it, and the burden falls on everyone but those responsible.

The core issue lies in a fundamental dereliction of duty. The Constitution explicitly tasks Congress with funding the government – a straightforward obligation that has become entangled in endless negotiation and political maneuvering. Public trust in Congress is at a historic low, yet incumbents continue to be re-elected, and no mechanism exists to hold them accountable for this most basic responsibility.

We meticulously track economic indicators, unemployment rates, and even judicial performance, but we fail to measure Congress’s ability to fulfill its primary function: keeping the government open. This oversight must be rectified. A public record of congressional performance on this crucial task is essential for fostering accountability.

Two simple changes could dramatically alter this pattern. First, congressional pay should be automatically suspended during a shutdown, with back pay only released upon the passage of a budget. Second, a standing rule should be implemented requiring Congress to remain in session until funding is restored – no recesses, no delays, just a commitment to resolve the issue before anyone goes home.

The TSA officer, the Coast Guard member, the FEMA staffer, the cybersecurity analyst – all those who continued to serve their country without pay deserved better. They upheld their end of the bargain. It’s time for Congress to finally do the same.
