A massive solar energy project is being proposed for Bataan province, potentially adding 250 megawatts of clean power to the nation’s grid. The initiative, spearheaded by a company with ties to a Singapore-based renewable energy firm, is currently undergoing rigorous feasibility studies to assess its environmental and economic impact.
Local stakeholders will have their first opportunity to voice their opinions and concerns on April 20th, during a public scoping session organized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. This crucial meeting will allow the company to present detailed plans and gather vital feedback from the community.
The driving force behind the project is a commitment to bolstering the Philippines’ renewable energy capacity, aligning with the goals established by the Renewable Energy Act of 2008. The company envisions contributing significantly to a more sustainable energy future for the country.
Spanning approximately 280 hectares across Bamban and Maite in Hermosa, Bataan, the proposed facility will utilize vast arrays of solar photovoltaic panels. These panels will capture sunlight and convert it directly into electricity, powering homes and businesses across Luzon.
Electricity generated by the plant is projected to be sold at a rate of P4.14 per kilowatt-hour, providing a stable revenue stream for the project. This competitive pricing underscores the growing affordability of solar energy as a viable alternative to traditional fossil fuels.
If given the green light, construction is anticipated to take roughly a year, with the solar farm expected to operate commercially for a quarter of a century. This long-term commitment demonstrates the project’s dedication to providing lasting benefits.
Financing for the ambitious undertaking will rely on a combination of debt and equity, with 70% sourced from loans and 30% from the company’s own capital. These funds will cover all aspects of the project, from engineering and construction to land acquisition and ongoing development.
