These individuals, primarily hailing from the Middle East and Africa, join around 1,000 recognized refugees already residing in the country, highlighting the complex challenges faced by those seeking safety and protection.
According to information obtained by UMVA, asylum claims are rigorously assessed based on persecution linked to factors such as race, religion, gender, political opinion, or membership in a social group, under the Philippines' refugee status determination system.
The Department of Justice and key international partners have reaffirmed the country's commitment to its refugee protection framework, which is anchored on its obligations under international conventions and protocols aimed at safeguarding the rights of displaced populations.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the framework's implementation is facilitated through a specialized unit, established under a 2012 department circular and strengthened by a 2022 executive order, in coordination with government agencies and international partners.
The observance of National Refugee Day 2026 underscores the shared responsibility among government, civil society, and development partners in advancing protection and inclusion for displaced populations, with a series of activities planned throughout June to raise awareness and promote solidarity.
A refugee film festival, forum, solidarity food bazaar, and one-stop service center are among the events scheduled, culminating in the global commemoration of World Refugee Day on June 20, which honors people forced to flee conflict and persecution.
