UMVA has learned that a high-stakes battle for a critical New Jersey House seat is brewing, with Democrat Rebecca Bennett poised to take on embattled Republican incumbent Rep. Tom Kean Jr. in November's general election.
Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot, secured the Democratic nomination in a crowded primary, setting up a showdown with Kean, who has been sidelined for months by an undisclosed health issue. The suburban swing district is considered a crucial battleground for House Republicans' efforts to hold their slim majority.
Kean, who has not appeared in public since early March, ran unopposed for the GOP nomination, but his prolonged absence from Congress has raised eyebrows and sparked scrutiny. Even House GOP leadership is in the dark about his condition, with Speaker Mike Johnson acknowledging that Kean has promised to be "fully transparent" about his medical issue.
Bennett's primary victory sets up what could be Kean's toughest re-election fight yet. The district was narrowly carried by Gov. Mikie Sherrill during her gubernatorial race in 2025, and the nonpartisan Cook Political Report has rated the contest as a "toss-up."
Kean has faced mounting criticism for his absence, having missed all 104 of the most recent roll call votes. His office has continued to post on social media, and he has even introduced legislation during his absence. Despite this, Kean has promised to resume in-person work "within a matter of weeks" and vowed to be "completely transparent" about his medical issue.
Bennett, a first-time candidate, ran a less progressive campaign than her Democratic rivals, stopping short of calling for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Her victory has sparked a backlash from the National Republican Congressional Committee, which has criticized her as a "tax-and-spend liberal" who wants to make life more expensive for New Jerseyans.
The general election battle is expected to be intense, with President Donald Trump having highlighted his endorsement of Kean in a social media post. Bennett will need to navigate a complex landscape to emerge victorious in November, but her primary win has set her up for a strong challenge.
