Google has announced the launch of Gemini Spark, a feature that allows its Gemini AI to automate workflows on Mac devices. This new functionality enables Gemini to act as a personal AI agent, completing multi-step tasks based on user requirements, even when the device is turned off.
Gemini Spark can access desktop files and apps, allowing it to perform tasks such as sorting downloaded PDFs into specific folders or creating a budget in Sheets using invoices saved to the computer. It can also update the worksheet on a regular schedule. The feature will be integrated with other Google apps like Tasks and Keep, as well as third-party apps like Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable, and Zillow Rentals.
These integrations will enable Gemini Spark to perform a range of tasks, including translating notes into action items, sharing files, submitting grocery orders, and making dinner reservations. However, users should be aware of the risks associated with handing control over to AI agents.
Google has emphasized that Gemini Spark works on user commands, only accessing files and apps that have been permitted. However, this doesn't eliminate the risk of a prompt injection attack, where hackers trick the AI into following malicious instructions. If users choose to allow Gemini Spark or another AI agent to act on their behalf, they should limit access, require manual review for certain tasks, and enable multi-factor authentication on connected accounts.
With the rollout of Gemini Spark planned for Mac devices "in the coming weeks," users will be able to access the feature on web and mobile first. As with any AI-powered technology, it's essential to proceed with caution and understand the potential risks involved.
