West London drivers are facing a month of potential gridlock as a vital section of the A40 has closed for urgent safety repairs. The closure, stretching from the Westway roundabout to the Marylebone flyover, began last night and will impact nearly 100,000 daily commuters.
The timing couldn’t be worse, coinciding with Eid celebrations. Businesses in the Marylebone area are bracing for a drop in customers, as the already busy roads become even more congested. Restaurant owner Ayman Al Zubaidi expressed concern about customers reaching his establishment, many of whom travel from across the city.
While some businesses are worried, others are taking a more pragmatic approach. Managers at an Italian restaurant acknowledged the inevitability of the disruption, noting their suppliers wouldn’t be affected. A family-run taverna in Notting Hill, with a largely local clientele, anticipates minimal impact.
The closure isn’t just a Marylebone issue. Experts warn of “ripples” spreading across the entire network, impacting roads from Camden to Hillingdon. The A4 corridor in Chiswick, the M4, and routes like the A312 and A406 are all expected to see increased traffic volume.
The AA described the A40 as a “critical” artery for London, emphasizing the scale of the disruption. They predict delays will be widespread, particularly during peak hours, as drivers divert onto already strained local roads. Careful planning and alternative routes are strongly advised.
Transport for London timed the repairs to coincide with the Easter break, hoping to mitigate some of the impact. However, the month-long closure is unavoidable, as the work is essential to ensure the road’s long-term safety.
Commuters relying on bus services should also prepare for delays. Dozens of routes are expected to be affected by the increased congestion, potentially adding significant time to journeys across the capital.
Drivers are encouraged to consider alternative routes, such as the A312 Parkway or A40 North Circular Road to connect to the A4 and M4. For those traveling to or from the M25, the M4 remains a viable option.
