Representative Lauren Boebert fiercely defended a social media post featuring comedian Dave Chappelle, responding to accusations that she exploited their encounter for political gain. She argued Chappelle himself had already ignited debate surrounding transgender issues through his widely-discussed comedy routines.
Boebert dismissed Chappelle’s recent criticism, referencing his interview where he expressed resentment over the situation. She stated, “Dave Chappelle can have his little counseling session with NPR,” framing his concerns as insignificant compared to the larger issues at play.
The controversy stems from a November 2023 photograph Boebert shared on social media with Chappelle and Representative Anna Paulina Luna. The caption, “Just three people who understand that there’s only two genders,” sparked immediate backlash and was later deleted from the platform.
Chappelle recounted the encounter on Capitol Hill, describing a wave of requests for photos from various congressional offices. He felt particularly singled out by Boebert, explaining he reluctantly agreed to the picture after already posing for dozens, only to have the moment “weaponized” and “politicized.”
The comedian’s Netflix specials, including “Sticks & Stones,” “Equanimity,” and “The Closer,” have consistently addressed transgender issues, generating significant controversy and placing him at the forefront of a national cultural conversation. He now claims Boebert unnecessarily drew him further into the political arena.
Boebert countered that Chappelle had proactively engaged in these discussions through his comedic work. “I think he's done that quite a bit, has he not?” she asserted, suggesting his own material invited public discourse.
When directly questioned about politicizing the moment, Boebert passionately defended her stance, emphasizing the urgency of the issue as she perceives it. She argued that the stakes are too high to remain silent.
Boebert delivered a stark and provocative statement, expressing her strong opposition to gender-affirming care for minors. She declared, “They're castrating our children and destroying them, absolutely ruining their lives over it. In Colorado… we castrate bulls, not baby boys. OK? And that's what it should be.”
