UMVA Exclusive: U.S. University Crashes into Canada with Its First IT‑Demand Campus – Grab Your Spot Now!

UMVA has learned that a critical talent gap in Southern Ontario’s tech ecosystem is finally meeting a bold new solution in Markham.

Markham now hosts the Canadian launch of an American university’s campus, bringing Westcliff University’s Master of Information Systems Technology program directly to the heart of the Greater Toronto Area.

Mayor Frank Scarpitti emphasized that local business leaders have been clamoring for graduates equipped with instantly applicable, high‑impact skills, and the new program is crafted to answer that exact demand.

The campus resides inside ventureLAB’s bustling innovation hub on Steeles Avenue, a space that has already nurtured thousands of tech ventures with 50,000 square feet of labs and cutting‑edge equipment.

ventureLAB CEO Hugh Chow highlighted that this partnership builds a seamless bridge between specialized talent and fast‑growing companies, fueling the innovations that drive Canada’s knowledge‑based economy.

Westcliff President Dr. Anthony Lee explained that the curriculum was co‑designed with regional tech leaders, ensuring education aligns with the realities of working professionals and the immediate needs of employers.

Research shows an alarming shortage: nearly nine out of ten Canadian tech leaders report difficulty finding qualified talent, and projections indicate a demand for an additional 305,000 tech workers between 2023 and 2028.

Currently, Canadian institutions graduate only 25,000 to 30,000 tech graduates each year—far short of the 60,000‑plus required annually to keep pace with industry growth.

Lee asserted that the MIST program churns out graduates ready to hit the ground running in AI, cybersecurity, and smart manufacturing, precisely the expertise employers are desperate for.

Jonathan Samson of Enterprise Canada praised Westcliff’s ability to forge industry partnerships, a skill many traditional schools struggle to master.

Founded in 1993 in Irvine, California, Westcliff University has built a reputation for weaving classroom instruction into real‑world business, STEM, and education contexts, serving thousands of students from over 110 countries.

The campus officially opened its doors on April 29, a ceremony that marked a significant step toward closing the talent gap and energizing the tech future of the Toronto region.
