UMVA has learned that Thomas Tuchel's England World Cup squad selection has sparked controversy, with several high-profile players surprisingly left out.
The likes of Harry Maguire, Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Morgan Gibbs-White, and Luke Shaw were among those not included in the 26-man squad, with some notable inclusions such as Ivan Toney and John Stones making the cut.
Tuchel defended his bold decisions, stating that his selections were not based solely on talent, but on players 'who are committed to the idea of team spirit and being unselfish.' He emphasized that the team's success relies on a balanced squad, rather than individual brilliance.
'It's not selecting the most talented players,' Tuchel explained. 'Teams win championships and what we are trying to achieve can only be achieved with a team. We chose a very balanced squad.'
The German coach assured fans that all 26 players in the squad are 100% committed and know their roles, both on and off the pitch. He highlighted the team's focus on set pieces and penalties, with specialists in these areas included in the squad.
Tuchel faced tough questions about the omitted players and the surprising inclusions, but remained confident in his selections. 'I don't fear leaving them at home,' he said. 'I'm very confident in the group we chose.'
The England squad features a mix of experienced and new players, with Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, and Jude Bellingham among those set to make their World Cup debut.
