The mayoral runoff contest in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, has concluded with a shocking two-vote margin between the top two candidates, Christine Erickson and state Sen. Jamie Smith.
Erickson, a former South Dakota state representative and former Sioux Falls city council member, is currently leading with 18,280 votes, while Smith, who is also a former state House member, trails behind with 18,278 votes.
The candidates will now head into a recount, which Smith has already requested. In a statement on Wednesday, Erickson expressed her gratitude to the people of Sioux Falls and her supporters, saying that "every single vote truly matters." She emphasized the importance of every vote and encouraged the community to come together to move forward.
In a phone call with Fox News Digital on Thursday, Smith acknowledged the tight margin and stated that "every vote does count," highlighting the significance of the election. Despite the close result, Smith expressed confidence in the recount process and promised to ensure its fairness, accuracy, and transparency.
As the city looks ahead to the next four years, Erickson has vowed to lead with common sense and serve the people of Sioux Falls. In a statement, she promised to put city government to work for the community, and both candidates have expressed a commitment to working together to ensure the city's bright future.
