A new chapter in Philippine renewable energy began as Acciona Energia initiated the installation of the first turbine for its P8.7-billion wind farm in Kalayaan, Laguna. The Kalayaan wind farm is envisioned as a powerful force, ultimately boasting 17 turbines poised to begin commercial operation before the year concludes. Each rotation will contribute to a substantial increase in the country’s renewable energy capacity, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional power sources.
These towering turbines, sourced from Goldwind, a leading Chinese manufacturer, represent a fusion of international expertise and local ambition. Their arrival signals a commitment to utilizing cutting-edge technology in the pursuit of environmental responsibility.
Upon completion, this facility promises to deliver enough electricity to power approximately 85,000 homes. More importantly, it’s projected to prevent the release of around 250,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere annually – a vital contribution to combating climate change.
The Kalayaan 2 Wind Power Project secured its place through a competitive green energy auction, backed by a 20-year power purchase agreement with the National Transmission Corp. This long-term commitment underscores the project’s stability and its role in the national energy landscape.
This initial phase represents just the beginning of a much larger vision: the 350-MW Kalayaan project. Acciona Energia’s ambition extends beyond this single wind farm, signaling a long-term investment in the Philippines’ renewable energy sector.
Last year, Acciona Energia revealed a robust development pipeline exceeding 2 gigawatts across the Philippines. This demonstrates a clear dedication to expanding its footprint and contributing significantly to the country’s energy independence.
Beyond wind power, the company is also actively developing a 180-megawatt-peak solar power project in Daanbantayan, Cebu. This diversification highlights a comprehensive approach to renewable energy, leveraging multiple sources to maximize impact.
