SCOTT MILLS AXED: Charity Cuts Ties in SHOCK Move!

SCOTT MILLS AXED: Charity Cuts Ties in SHOCK Move!

The name Scott Mills, once synonymous with British radio, is now shrouded in controversy. A decade-long association with the MS Society UK has abruptly ended as the charity navigates the fallout from serious allegations surrounding the broadcaster’s past.

Last week, the BBC terminated Mills’ contracts following the emergence of new information. This decision stemmed from a complaint relating to a historical police investigation – one that initially focused on allegations of serious sexual offences against a boy under 16, dating back to the late 1990s. The investigation, though ultimately closed due to insufficient evidence seven years ago, has resurfaced to dramatically alter the course of his career.

Tim Davie, the outgoing Director-General, informed staff that the new information left the BBC with no alternative but to act decisively. The speed and finality of the dismissal sent shockwaves through Broadcasting House and beyond, leaving many stunned by the sudden turn of events.

The MS Society, where Mills had passionately advocated for those living with multiple sclerosis – a cause deeply personal to him through his mother’s diagnosis – has now placed him on leave while they carefully review the situation. The charity emphasized the gravity of the concerns and their unwavering commitment to the MS community.

The repercussions extend beyond radio. A plaque commemorating Mills’ years at the BBC, a symbol of his long tenure from 1998 to 2022, has been quietly removed from the Radio 1 studio. Photographs have also been taken down from Radio 2 areas, a stark visual representation of his swift removal from the public eye.

Mills himself released a brief statement acknowledging a 2016 allegation that prompted a police investigation, which concluded in 2018 without charges. He expressed hope for understanding and respect for his desire to refrain from further public comment, given the age of the allegations and the previous closure of the case.

His relatively recent move to host Radio 2’s Breakfast Show, taking over from Zoe Ball in January of last year, had positioned him among the BBC’s highest earners, with a salary exceeding £315,000. Now, the search for a replacement is underway, with names like Vernon Kay, Gary Davies, and Rylan Clark frequently mentioned as potential successors.

The BBC acknowledged the shock and surprise felt by many, while carefully navigating the legal and ethical complexities of the situation. They confirmed obtaining new information in recent weeks, leading to direct conversations with Mills and the subsequent termination of his contracts.

This case also raises questions about the BBC’s prior knowledge of the initial 2017 police investigation, which was closed in 2019 without arrest or charge. The corporation has stated it is reviewing what was known at the time and has reiterated its commitment to a strong internal culture and clear behavioral expectations.

The BBC has also issued an apology for failing to adequately follow up on a separate allegation of “inappropriate communications” raised against Mills last year, highlighting a need for continued scrutiny and improvement in its internal processes.
