A fatal collision occurred this morning at the Hoghton village level crossing when a car remained on the tracks and was struck by a passenger train.
The incident involved the 7:51 am service traveling from Colne to Preston. One occupant of the car was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second passenger was transported to hospital with life‑threatening injuries. No passengers or staff on the train were harmed.
Northern’s managing director expressed deep sadness over the tragedy, extended condolences to the victim’s family, and confirmed full cooperation with emergency services, the rail infrastructure operator, and the accident investigation authority.
Train services between Preston and Blackburn have been suspended for the remainder of the day, with replacement bus services provided for affected passengers.
Police, paramedics and fire crews responded to the scene on Station Road, and multiple ambulances, including air ambulances, were dispatched to the rural location approximately five miles from Preston.
The level crossing and adjacent road remain closed while investigators collect evidence. A decision on whether a formal investigation will be launched will be made in the coming days.
The nearest railway station is Pleasington, which is served by Northern trains.
