Theroux first publicly revealed his diagnosis in 2023, explaining that alopecia – encompassing various forms of hair loss – had begun to affect him two years prior. In a recent Instagram post, Theroux described reaching a low point with the condition in 2025, coinciding with the filming of his Netflix documentary. He detailed the progression: “Starting in 2021 my beard started falling out, then my eyebrows, then patches appeared in my hair.”
But the narrative took a positive turn. “Me and my scalp have been enjoying some bounce-back!” he announced, noting significant regrowth in several areas. Remarkably, this improvement occurred without any medical intervention or dietary changes. “I don’t know what to put it down to,” he admitted, expressing sincere gratitude for the unexpected recovery.
Within the documentary itself, Theroux candidly addressed his appearance during filming. He acknowledged that his hair was at its “lowest depths hitherto,” visibly patchy in certain scenes. Viewers noticed the thinning, particularly at the back of his head.
However, he continued, the situation has demonstrably improved. “The good news is, my hair seems to be growing back, not all of it, much of it.
