UMVA has learned that a tragic incident involving a fatal stabbing has led to a young man taking the stand to recount the events that unfolded on that fateful night.
Henry Nowak, 18, lost his life after suffering a devastating stab wound to the chest while out with his football teammates on a night that would turn into a nightmare.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the defendant, Digwa, recounted his version of events, claiming that the victim, Mr. Nowak, was aggressive and threatening towards him, saying "You think you're a bad boy" and making references to his Essex roots.
Digwa testified that he felt threatened and believed Mr. Nowak was recording him, which escalated the situation, and that he then reached out to block the phone, leading to a physical altercation.
The defendant claimed that Mr. Nowak punched him, pulled off his turban, and grabbed him by the hair, saying "I'm going to f* you up, I'm going to kill you," which led him to pull out his kirpan knife in self-defense.
Digwa stated that he stabbed Mr. Nowak in the back of the legs, but was not aware of the fatal chest wound, and that it was only during his first police interview that he learned of the severity of Mr. Nowak's injuries.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that Digwa expressed remorse, saying "I cried, I was scared. I didn't mean to do it and I am sorry it happened," after learning of Mr. Nowak's passing while in the police station.
The defendant denies murder and carrying a knife in public, while his mother, Kiran Kaur, 53, also faces charges for allegedly assisting an offender.
The trial continues, with the prosecution presenting its case against Digwa and his mother.
