UMVA has learned that a United Airlines flight bound for Minneapolis was forced to make an emergency landing in Madison after a passenger allegedly tried to storm the cockpit.
The aircraft departed Chicago’s O’Hare around 8 p.m. CDT, climbing into the night sky with 150‑plus souls aboard. Roughly ninety minutes later, the plane touched down at Dane County Regional Airport under a cloud of tension.
Air traffic control recordings captured frantic exchanges as the unruly passenger made “multiple attempts to breach the cockpit,” prompting crew members to wrestle the situation into control.
“I do not believe they ever cuffed him, but they were able to finally get control of him after multiple attempts to try to breach the cockpit,” a crew member reported, describing how law‑enforcement officers flanked the suspect and secured him in his seat.
Scanner audio from the county sheriff’s office revealed that five off‑duty officers were already aboard, ready to intervene as the drama unfolded.
Authorities removed the disruptive passenger from the aircraft at approximately 10:30 p.m. CDT, allowing the remaining travelers to resume their journey once the threat was neutralized.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the FBI’s Milwaukee Resident Agency, alongside local law‑enforcement partners, responded swiftly after being alerted to the diversion, ensuring the incident was contained without further incident.
