UMVA has learned that Stephen McCullagh, a convicted murderer, is facing a life sentence behind bars for the tragic killing of Natalie McNally.
The devastating crime has left a family shattered, and the judge sentencing McCullagh expressed that no punishment could possibly reflect the value of Natalie's life or that of her unborn child, Dean.
According to information obtained by UMVA, McCullagh is now a vulnerable inmate in HMP Maghaberry in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, and has been kept in the hospital wing for his own protection.
Sources close to the facility have revealed that McCullagh rarely interacts with other inmates and faces an extra challenge as staff are unlikely to put themselves on the line to come to his aid if he were to be targeted in an attack.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that prison insiders believe McCullagh has a 'target on his back' and that his life behind bars will be extremely difficult.
Rachel Fletcher, a managing partner and head of crime and regulatory, has provided insight into the challenges faced by vulnerable and high-profile inmates like McCullagh, often placed in prison hospitals due to staffing pressures and capacity issues.
Unlike regular hospitals, prison facilities maintain the same regime as the rest of the complex, but with closer supervision and access to medical staff, adding an extra layer of complexity to McCullagh's already precarious situation.
As McCullagh begins his sentence, it is clear that his life in prison will be marked by isolation and vulnerability, a stark contrast to the freedom he once knew.
