The familiar storefronts of Quiz, a once-prominent name in British fashion, are facing an uncertain future. The company has entered administration, burdened by debts exceeding £40 million, signaling a dramatic turn for the brand.
The immediate impact has been felt acutely by employees. A devastating blow came with the news of 109 redundancies at the firm’s Glasgow headquarters and distribution center, leaving many facing an unexpected job loss.
Quiz’s struggles weren’t sudden. Reports earlier in the year highlighted “challenging trading conditions,” particularly a disappointing Christmas season. The brand found itself battling powerful economic forces reshaping the retail landscape.
These headwinds included shifting consumer preferences, escalating business rates, and rising employment costs – a confluence of factors squeezing margins and impacting profitability. Despite these challenges, stores operating within New Look and Matalan locations remain unaffected for now.
Founded in 1993 by Tarak Ramzan, Quiz experienced a period of growth and success, culminating in a public listing on the London Stock Exchange in 2017. This recent downturn marks a stark contrast to that earlier trajectory.
This isn’t the first time Quiz has faced financial peril. The company previously entered administration in June 2020, during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. A subsequent restructuring allowed it to renegotiate rents and continue operating.
However, the reprieve proved temporary. Another 200 jobs were cut in February of the previous year as warnings surfaced about the potential for a cash flow crisis in early 2025. The situation has now reached a critical point.
Adding to the concerns, the Quiz online store ceased accepting orders earlier this year, further restricting revenue streams and signaling the severity of the financial difficulties.
The following stores across the UK are now impacted by the administration: Aberdeen, Basingstoke, Belfast-Castlecourt, Bracknell, Cardiff, Carlisle, Castleford, Clydebank, Craigavon, Derby, Dunfermline, Eastbourne, Gateshead-Metro, Glasgow (Braehead, Buchanan Galleries, Fort, St Enoch), Hanley, Hull, Inverness, Irvine, Leeds-Whiterose, Leicester, Livingston, Manchester (Arndale, Trafford Centre), Mansfield, Merryhill, Newry, Newtownabbey, Northampton, Norwich, Portsmouth, Romford, Sheffield-Meadowhall, Stirling, Telford, Thurrock-Lakeside, Warrington, and Watford.
In Ireland, Quiz concessions located in Carlow (Shaws), Drogheda (Shaws), Galway (Anthony Ryans), Kilkenny (Goods of Kilkenny), Letterkenny (Menarys), Sligo (Mullaney Brothers), and Wexford (Shaws) are also affected. The future of these locations hangs in the balance.
