A chilling reality underlies the escalating conflict: Iran’s formidable missile arsenal isn’t a homegrown achievement, but a direct result of a decades-long, clandestine partnership with North Korea. This alliance, meticulously documented by experts, has armed Iran with the capability to strike targets across the Middle East and beyond.
The launch of intermediate-range ballistic missiles toward Diego Garcia – a critical U.S. facility over 2,500 miles from Iran – wasn’t a sudden escalation, but a demonstration of a capability acquired nearly two decades ago. In 2005, Iran took delivery of 19 Musudan missiles from North Korea, a “secret” weapon now unleashed on the world stage.
This isn’t simply about missiles; it’s about a systematic transfer of technology and expertise. North Korea has consistently provided Iran with the building blocks for a sophisticated missile program, from complete systems like the No Dong – replicated as Iran’s Shahab-3 – to crucial improvements in range and lethality.
The QIAM, a short-range ballistic missile used against U.S. facilities and neighboring Arab states, stands as a prime example of North Korean assistance. This collaboration has allowed Iran to develop increasingly powerful weapons, including the Emad and Ghadr, capable of reaching targets well within range of Israel and U.S. allies.
