UMVA has learned that Liverpool is closely monitoring West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, with a possible summer move on the horizon, and the timing of this development is particularly intriguing.
The 21-year-old Fernandes has caught Liverpool's attention, and Manchester United is also interested in acquiring his services, despite recently agreeing to a £35 million deal to sign Éderson from Atalanta.
Fernandes could become a symbolic signing for Liverpool, especially with Andoni Iraola expected to take over as the club's next manager, and if the deal is completed soon, Liverpool will want to move quickly in the transfer market.
Iraola likes players who can run, press, play quickly, and handle transitions, and Fernandes fits that profile, being technically sharp, mobile, and comfortable carrying the ball through midfield.
At just 21, Fernandes also has plenty of room to develop, which aligns with Liverpool's need to refresh the squad without simply signing older stop-gap players, making him an attractive target for the club.
However, West Ham will not make this easy, reportedly wanting around £80 million for Fernandes, a huge number, especially for a player still developing, but the Hammers are expected to consider offers due to their need to raise funds following relegation.
Manchester United's interest in Fernandes adds another layer of complexity, as they still want to add midfield quality, and Fernandes would give them a younger, more creative option, meaning Liverpool may have to move fast if Iraola truly wants him.
Fernandes would be a very interesting first signing for Iraola at Liverpool, not arriving as a finished superstar, but with the energy and technical ability to grow into a major player, although the £80 million price tag feels too high, especially with Liverpool needing to strengthen other areas.
