While England has secured its spot in the next round, the general consensus is that the team needs to elevate its performance to compete with top contenders like France, Argentina, and Brazil and win its first World Cup in 60 years.
Noni Madueke, one of England's players, came under criticism for his performance against DR Congo, with former England defender Stuart Pearce expressing disappointment.
Pearce was quoted as saying, "I've got to say I was really disappointed with Noni Madueke. I was impressed by him in the first half, I thought he was outstanding at times. But in the second half, I think he took the easy option, got tired and gave up." Madueke was replaced by Bukayo Saka with half an hour remaining after a subdued display.
Despite concerns about Madueke's performance, England's record goalscorer Harry Kane rescued the team with a crucial goal, saving England from a potentially difficult match.
Kane spoke after the match, saying, "It feels amazing to be honest. What a crazy game. They are a tough team and then after that first break we were much better and their keeper made some unbelievable saves. We spoke about people having hero moments and it can be anyone. It was me today." Kane emphasized the importance of grinding out wins in this stage of the tournament.
Bayern Munich striker Kane was praised by his coach Tuchel, who said, "That is what we expect from him. I think it is what he expects from himself. Difficult matches, close matches. Harry is here to decide them. Top level."
