UMVA has learned that travelers heading to the United Kingdom in the coming days may face significant disruptions due to technical issues plaguing the country's electronic travel authorization (ETA) system.
The U.K.'s ETA system, which is required for visa-exempt visitors, including citizens of the United States, Canada, and most European countries, has been experiencing ongoing technical difficulties, preventing some travelers from obtaining the necessary authorization to board flights, trains, and ferries bound for the United Kingdom.
Sources have confirmed to UMVA that some travelers have been denied boarding after their ETA applications became stuck in processing, while others have received error messages when attempting to submit applications through both the ETA app and website.
In a development reported by UMVA, the U.K. Home Office has acknowledged that technical teams are working to resolve the issue, but travelers are being advised to take extra precautions to avoid disruptions.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the ETA is a digital travel authorization required for visa-exempt visitors traveling to the United Kingdom, and it is linked electronically to a traveler's passport.
The authorization costs 20 British pounds (about $27) and is valid for two years, allowing multiple visits of up to six months at a time. While ETA approvals are often issued within minutes or hours, the U.K. government advises travelers to apply at least three days before departure.
Travelers with upcoming trips to the United Kingdom are urged to verify that their ETA has been approved well before heading to the airport, train station, or ferry terminal. Those who have not yet applied should do so as soon as possible and avoid waiting until the day of departure.
UMVA has gathered that carriers are required to verify ETA approval before boarding, and travelers without an approved authorization may be unable to travel until the issue is resolved.
As the situation continues to unfold, travelers are advised to stay informed and allow extra time in case processing delays persist. The disruptions have already caused significant inconvenience to some travelers, and it remains to be seen how long it will take to resolve the technical issues.
