CARNEY'S POWER GRAB: Canada Just Changed FOREVER.

CARNEY'S POWER GRAB: Canada Just Changed FOREVER.

Mark Carney now commands a majority in the House of Commons, a remarkable shift achieved not through a renewed mandate from voters, but through a series of strategic maneuvers. In a matter of months, he transitioned from leading a minority government to holding a firm majority, all without facing the scrutiny of another election.

The question now echoing through the halls of power is simple: who needs elections when backroom deals deliver the desired outcome? The recent crossings of Chris D’Entremont and Marylin Gladu from the Conservatives to the Liberals have ignited a fierce debate, prompting calls for a ban on floor-crossing – a practice that allows MPs to switch allegiances mid-term.

While provincial attempts to outlaw floor-crossing have seen mixed results – New Brunswick’s law was never tested, and Manitoba’s was ultimately repealed after being upheld in court – the prospect of a federal ban seems unlikely. The reality is stark: politicians who benefit from such maneuvers are unlikely to dismantle the very system that empowers them.

Prime Minister Mark Carney speaks at the Liberal national convention in Montreal on Saturday, April 11, 2026.

So, what direction will Carney’s Liberal team take now? A troubling inconsistency seems to plague the party, a lack of clear ideological grounding. The current Liberal caucus is a patchwork of ideologies, encompassing members from the far-left, fervent environmentalists, conservative business leaders, and even those who previously defended the Freedom Convoy.

This internal dissonance is strikingly apparent in the party’s policy positions. Liberals recently proposed legislation requiring individuals to be 16 years or older to have social media accounts, citing potential harm to younger users. Yet, simultaneously, they advocate for allowing 12- and 13-year-olds to make irreversible decisions regarding gender transition, including the use of puberty blockers, without requiring parental consent.

The contradictions don’t end there. The party, led by Mark Carney – a man who amassed wealth through international experience – enthusiastically entertained the idea of an “exit tax” on Canadians seeking opportunities abroad. Patrick Pichette, a business executive who built his fortune outside of Canada, received applause for suggesting that young Canadians who choose to leave should repay their education costs.

Pichette even proposed shutting down the TN visa program, which allows Canadian professionals to work in the United States, arguing that it’s time to either retain these skilled workers or recoup the investment made in their education. His suggestion – “You want to go to the U.S., give me back my money!” – resonated with the crowd.

However, such a policy could potentially violate Section 6 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which guarantees every citizen the right to leave and enter the country freely. The irony is palpable, coming from a man who himself prospered in the United States and now resides in the United Kingdom, and from a leader who shares a similar trajectory.

Ultimately, the Liberals appear singularly focused on one objective: maintaining power. The recent floor-crossings and byelection victories have solidified their position, but the underlying question remains: at what cost to principle and consistency?
