Azamara Cruises: Ditch the Tourist Traps & UNLOCK True Travel!

Azamara Cruises: Ditch the Tourist Traps & UNLOCK True Travel!

The scent of orange blossoms hung heavy in the air, a sweet perfume that finally signaled I was truly in Seville. It wasn’t the grand architecture or the famous landmarks that first captivated me, but this subtle, intoxicating fragrance – a sensory detail that unlocked the soul of the city. It was our second day, and I was remembering exactly why I’d always been drawn to the unique voyages offered by Azamara.

Our guide, Juan, led us to the rooftop of the Metropol Parasol, a breathtaking modern structure known locally as “Las Setas” (the mushrooms). From this vantage point, Seville unfolded beneath us, a tapestry of terracotta rooftops and winding streets. He pointed out familiar sights – the majestic Seville Cathedral – but it was the hidden gems he revealed that truly sparked my curiosity. The labyrinthine Jewish Quarter, for example, a place I hadn’t discovered on my own the previous day.

Over the next few hours, Juan led our small group on an immersive walk, far beyond the typical tourist trail. We ventured into a bustling local food market, overflowing with vibrant produce and the chatter of vendors. We discovered a rooftop bar, where we savored tapas and local wine while watching the city shimmer in the afternoon light. This wasn’t just sightseeing; it was a deep dive into the heart of Seville, an experience rarely found on standard cruise itineraries.

Most cruise lines offer fleeting glimpses of a destination, constrained by short port calls. But Azamara operates differently. With a fleet of just four intimate vessels, carrying fewer than 700 guests each, they prioritize longer stays and curated experiences. Destination immersion isn’t just a marketing phrase; it’s the very essence of their approach.

This commitment to deeper exploration was vividly apparent during our two-day, two-night stay in Seville. Arriving on a Wednesday and departing on a Friday morning felt extraordinary, especially on a six-night sailing. It allowed for multiple tours, repeated visits to favorite spots, and the chance to experience the city’s vibrant nightlife – a luxury rarely afforded to cruise passengers.

I spent one day independently exploring the historic center, marveling at the sheer scale of the Seville Cathedral, the third-largest in the world, and losing myself in the Moorish splendor of the Royal Alcazar. The Alcazar’s Water Gardens were instantly recognizable to any fan of “Game of Thrones,” having served as a filming location for the Water Gardens of Dorne.

The next day, guided by Juan, we delved into Seville’s hidden corners. I wandered along the Guadalquivir River, visiting the 800-year-old Torre del Oro, a historic watchtower. We strolled through the architectural masterpiece that is the Plaza de Espana, admiring its stunning tiled bridges and alcoves, each representing a Spanish province.

As evening descended, I found myself at a local tapas bar, indulging in chicharrones – crispy, roasted pork belly – and a glass of the region’s fresh, fruity red wine. The atmosphere was lively, authentic, and utterly captivating. It was so easy to get lost in the moment, to forget I was even on a cruise ship.

The ability to dock in Seville itself was remarkable. Located 50 miles inland, accessible only by the smallest of vessels navigating the Guadalquivir River and a narrow lock, Seville is a destination largely inaccessible to larger cruise ships. Azamara’s smaller size allowed us to experience the city from its heart, a privilege denied to most cruisers.

This dedication to reaching unique ports extended to other stops on our itinerary. In Gibraltar, we were treated to an exclusive evening performance at St. Michael’s Cave, a stunning natural limestone cavern. The event, dubbed “Music Beneath the Rock,” featured a local ensemble performing a captivating concert by candlelight – a truly unforgettable experience.

The evening was a perfect example of an “AzAmazing Evening,” a signature event offered on every Azamara cruise, designed to immerse guests in the local culture. It was a testament to the line’s commitment to creating meaningful connections with the destinations they visit.

Beyond the curated experiences, Azamara Journey offered a refined and intimate atmosphere. The ship, though launched in 2000, felt remarkably well-maintained, and the upcoming renovations promise to elevate the experience even further. With just 694 passengers, the ship fostered a sense of community and personalized service.

The crew, nearly 400 strong, were exceptionally attentive and intuitive. Servers anticipated my needs before I even voiced them, and my personal butler, Virglio, provided seamless service, from arranging dinner reservations to delivering afternoon tea with scones. It was the kind of attentive care that transforms a good vacation into an extraordinary one.

Azamara’s value extends beyond the onboard experience. Fares include gratuities and a comprehensive beverage package, covering everything from specialty coffees to premium spirits. This all-inclusive approach simplifies the experience and allows guests to fully immerse themselves in the destination.

Azamara isn’t about ticking off a list of famous landmarks; it’s about forging a deeper connection with the places you visit. It’s about savoring the local flavors, embracing the culture, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. It’s a different kind of cruising, one that prioritizes exploration, authenticity, and a genuine sense of discovery.
