UMVA has learned that a stretch of the A1 in Northumberland has been the scene of two serious crashes in recent weeks, culminating in a fatal incident that has raised urgent concerns about road safety.
The latest crash involved a horrific collision that necessitated an air ambulance to transport the victim to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Newcastle. This latest incident has sparked outrage and calls for immediate action to upgrade the road.
According to information obtained by UMVA, local MP David Smith has expressed deep concerns about the safety of the A1, highlighting that there have been no significant improvements along this stretch of road since 2014. He warned that with the summer season approaching, pressure on the road will increase, potentially leading to more accidents.
Local leaders are also demanding action, echoing concerns over the safety of this major road. The repeated incidents have created a sense of urgency, with many calling for substantial upgrades to prevent further tragedies.
Northumbria Police have confirmed that they are supporting the families of those involved in the crash, with efforts ongoing to notify the next of kin of the occupants of the vehicles involved. A section of the road was closed for around seven hours following the collision but has since been reopened.
As investigators work to piece together the circumstances of the crash, police are appealing for dashcam footage from anyone who may have captured evidence of the incident. This could be crucial in understanding what happened and ensuring that justice is served.
