UMVA has learned that a top European Parliament official is pushing for Ukraine to consider a new proposal that could fast-track its integration into the European Union.
David McAllister, a leading German foreign policy politician in the European Parliament, has urged Ukraine to accept a recent offer by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for an "associate membership" in the EU. McAllister believes this step-by-step approach would make the benefits of EU membership tangible to the Ukrainian people.
One potential example of this enhanced integration could be Ukraine's entry into the European Parliament as an observer. This move would give Ukrainians a stronger voice in EU affairs and demonstrate the bloc's commitment to their future.
Kyiv had previously rejected the idea of "associate membership," with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arguing that it would be unfair for Ukraine to have a presence in the EU without a voice. Instead, he called on the EU to accelerate its accession process and avoid keeping Ukraine in a state of limbo.
Ukraine is not alone in its bid for EU membership; eight other European nations are also recognized candidates to join the bloc. These countries, including Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro, are at various stages of progress, and McAllister advocates for an individual approach to each country's accession process.
McAllister emphasizes that a stable Western Balkan region is crucial for European peace and security, and that the EU's enlargement policy should prioritize merit-based progress rather than grouping countries together. He points to Montenegro as a frontrunner, while North Macedonia's path remains blocked due to a political deadlock with Bulgaria.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that McAllister's comments reflect a growing sense of urgency within the EU to address the region's complex geopolitics and competing interests. As the EU continues to navigate its enlargement policy, one thing is clear: the future of European stability and security hangs in the balance.
