Mayor Bowser urges families to stay home for Fourth of July fireworks amid delayed start time

Mayor Bowser urges families to stay home for Fourth of July fireworks amid delayed start time

Washington, D.C. officials have adjusted plans for the July Fourth fireworks display to accommodate the city’s 250th anniversary celebrations, with event organizers anticipating a shift in public attendance patterns due to the extended timing. The pyrotechnics show, scheduled to begin at 11 p.m. and last over 40 minutes, marks a significant departure from the earlier 9 p.m. start times of recent years.

Mayor Muriel Bowser highlighted the late-hour change as a strategic decision to allow event staff to focus on safety and logistics. She noted that many families with young children are likely to opt for televised broadcasts or neighborhood gatherings instead of attending in person. “When people have generally watched the fireworks, gotten on Metro, and they’re home by 11 o’clock,” she explained, “this year’s start time means a different planning approach for families.”

July 4th festivities on the National Mall will span the entire day, beginning with performances and military flyovers at 1 p.m. A public address is scheduled for 7 p.m., followed by the fireworks display. Organizers aim to set a global record by launching approximately 851,000 fireworks, surpassing the previous mark of 810,904 set in 2016. The company overseeing the event described its goal as creating “the most memorable fireworks display for this generation.”

Entry points to the restricted viewing area will open at 1 p.m. near Constitution Avenue and Independence Avenue. Attendees will undergo security screenings similar to those at airports, with only small bags permitted. Officials emphasized that no credible threats have been identified for the event but reaffirmed ongoing vigilance. Bowser encouraged residents to prioritize personal safety and family needs when deciding on attendance plans.
