Nation Braces for Second Heatwave: Exploring Strategies to Mitigate the Impact

The record-breaking heatwave that swept across the UK has left a lasting impact, with temperatures soaring above 50 degrees Celsius in various parts of London. Thermal camera images captured by Greenpeace UK revealed the extent of the heat, with pavements, rail platforms, and building sites reaching sweltering surface temperatures.

According to Met Office scientists, the UK reaching temperatures of 45 degrees Celsius regularly is a plausible scenario. This alarming trend has been linked to human-induced climate change, which is causing more intense and frequent heatwaves. The consequences of such extreme temperatures are far-reaching, including health implications from heat stress, impacts on transportation, energy, and water supply.

London mayor Sadiq Khan has implemented the city's first heat emergency plan, inspired by the US desert city of Phoenix, which has been coping with extreme heat. The plan aims to mitigate the effects of heatwaves and protect citizens from their impacts. As the UK continues to experience more frequent and intense heatwaves, the importance of such measures cannot be overstated.

While temperatures remain below 25 degrees Celsius in London and the South East, the area in the eye of the heatwave, a rare extreme heat warning was in place. However, forecasters predict a turn into warmer weather from Wednesday, with dry and bright conditions expected for most areas. The west and north will see spells of rain and average temperatures, but the areas most desperate for rainfall in the south will remain dry, risking drought and another hosepipe ban.

The Met Office forecasts a high-pressure area lingering from the Azores in the Atlantic, which could settle over the UK and western Europe this weekend and early next week. Early modelling suggests temperatures in London and the surrounding areas could reach 30 degrees Celsius by Tuesday. As the UK continues to experience more frequent and intense heatwaves, it is clear that the consequences of climate change are far-reaching and require immediate attention.
