A desperate carjacking attempt on a Texas father and his family of eight—including a baby—ended in a fatal shootout. Police confirmed the armed suspect was an illegal immigrant from Mexico.
The chaos erupted Sunday afternoon in Garland, Texas. Jose Ramirez, 30, crashed into two cars, then abandoned his vehicle and tried to seize several others by force at a nearby gas station.
When that failed, he sprinted across the road to a convenience store parking lot. There, he targeted a father sitting in his car with his entire family.
Surveillance footage captured the horrifying moment: Ramirez yanked the father out of the driver's seat and forcefully shoved his way inside. A small child scrambled from the back seat as the family scattered in panic.
Ramirez slammed the doors shut and dropped into the driver's side. The father, now on the passenger side, didn't hesitate—he opened fire.
Police arrived to find Ramirez critically wounded. He was rushed to a local hospital but pronounced dead. No one else was injured.
Authorities confirmed the father stayed at the scene and cooperated fully. He was not charged. The shooting was ruled self-defense.
"The suspect was using force, and the father had no way to know if he had a weapon," said Garland Police Lt. Pedro Barineau. "It all happened really fast."
A nearby witness, who recorded Ramirez breaking into cars at the gas station, described his unsettling behavior. "You could tell he was not in his right state of mind," she said. "I'm just glad the man was able to protect himself and his family."
No weapons were found on Ramirez. But in that split-second fight for survival, the father made a choice that saved his loved ones—and left a carjacker dead.
