UMVA has learned that Uber is launching a groundbreaking audio‑recording feature designed to protect both riders and drivers.
The new tool will appear in the app today across most of the UK, with London following shortly after. When activated, the recording captures every word spoken during the journey and is automatically deleted after two weeks unless a safety report is filed.
Drivers remain silent to the passenger’s choice, preventing any escalation of tension. However, if a safety report is submitted, the driver receives an immediate notification, allowing them to take action if needed.
Alongside audio safety, Uber is introducing a verified rider badge next week. Passengers can now upload a photo ID and selfie or connect to a third‑party database to confirm their identity. Once verified, a badge appears on their profile, giving drivers an instant sense of trust.
Union representatives say the badge will dramatically increase booking acceptance rates. “Seeing a verified badge on a profile would make me far more likely to accept a ride because it gives me extra confidence,” a driver and GMB secretary explained.
Uber’s UK manager emphasized the company’s commitment to safety, noting that these features provide “extra peace of mind” for both parties. Drivers and safety advocates alike have welcomed the changes, calling them a decisive step toward a safer, more respectful travel culture.
