A former high school special education teacher in Florida has been arrested on multiple charges related to engaging in sexual activity with a 17-year-old student. Michelle Lynn Hancock, 41, of Palm Bay, is accused of transmitting information harmful to minors, using a computer to seduce or solicit a child, and other offenses.
Hancock was arrested Wednesday after police responded to a suspicious pickup truck on the side of the road, where she was found with the teen. Both allegedly admitted to engaging in sexual activity. A spokesperson for the school district stated that Hancock is no longer employed by the district.
The teen had previously attended Heritage High School, where Hancock taught special education. He had withdrawn from the school and enrolled in virtual classes, but continued to visit Hancock at the school. The pair reportedly maintained a relationship that began with kissing in Hancock's classroom.
According to authorities, Hancock and the teen began texting each other again a month ago and re-engaged in sexual activity. Hancock allegedly sent the teen photos of herself that were "sexual in nature." The teen's brother had previously attended the same school, and Hancock taught his brother as well.
Hancock is being held in the Brevard County jail on a $525,000 bond. The school district has stated that it is committed to providing a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.
