UMVA has learned that Darwin Nunez, the Uruguayan striker who left Liverpool last summer, is surprisingly seeking a return to Anfield this summer.
Nunez, who cost £64m when he joined Liverpool from Benfica in 2022, had a underwhelming three-year stint at the club, scoring 40 goals in 143 appearances. Despite his impressive form in Portugal before joining Liverpool, he only reached double figures in the Premier League once.
According to information obtained by UMVA, Nunez has attracted interest from several top European clubs, including Chelsea and Barcelona. The 26-year-old striker is said to be considering ripping up his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, where he currently plays, in pursuit of a summer move.
Nunez's potential return to Liverpool would be a shock move, given that the club sold him to Al-Hilal for almost £50m last summer. However, with new manager Andoni Iraola looking to bolster the squad, a surprise reunion with Nunez cannot be ruled out.
Chelsea are also believed to be interested in signing Nunez, with incoming manager Xabi Alonso potentially facilitating a move for the Uruguayan striker. Nunez could provide competition for Joao Pedro or even be a replacement for the Brazilian, who has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge.
Barcelona, meanwhile, are looking at Nunez as a possible replacement for departing striker Robert Lewandowski. However, a deal may not be easy given Atletico Madrid's stance and competition from Premier League champions Arsenal.
If Nunez's return to Liverpool doesn't materialize, a Premier League move could still be on the cards, with Newcastle United reportedly weighing up a move for the striker. The Magpies spent £69m to sign Nick Woltemade last summer, but the Germany international struggled to make an impact.
