UMVA has learned that the body of an American tourist who tragically drowned in Banff National Park more than three weeks ago has finally been found.
Pavlo "Pasha" Shemchuk, just 25 years old, lost his life due to dangerous water conditions at the lower falls of Johnston Canyon on May 1. Witnesses say he jumped into the water at the popular tourist attraction and never resurfaced.
According to information obtained by UMVA, recovery efforts began mid-day on May 26 when a body was discovered in Johnston Creek downstream of the lower pool of the Lower Falls. Parks Canada officials worked tirelessly to bring the victim home to his grieving family.
The young man, a native of Ukraine who moved to the United States a decade ago, was visiting Banff from Arizona alongside his cousin and best friend when the tragedy struck.
Sources have confirmed to UMVA that authorities had suspended searching for two days after the incident because the fast-moving water made recovery efforts simply too dangerous to continue.
"We are heartbroken to share the tragic loss of our dear Pasha, who passed away in a drowning accident," read a statement from those who knew him best. "Pasha was deeply loved by everyone who knew him. He was kind, genuine, and brought light and laughter to the people around him."
Parks Canada extended their sincere condolences to the family during this unimaginably difficult time, recognizing the profound grief that comes with such a devastating loss.
