Arsenal's £100M BLUNDER? Rice Copycat Could DESTROY Their Season!

Arsenal's £100M BLUNDER? Rice Copycat Could DESTROY Their Season!

The whispers surrounding Sandro Tonali’s future are growing louder, with Arsenal reportedly among the clubs circling the Newcastle midfielder. But a football legend questions whether the Gunners truly need another player in that mold, drawing a striking comparison to their current midfield maestro.

Tonali has blossomed at St James’ Park, quickly establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most coveted central midfielders. His performances have sparked intense speculation ahead of the summer transfer window, with Arsenal previously linked after a setback in their squad.

Newcastle, however, firmly resisted any attempts to pry him away mid-season, recognizing his vital role. Now, with Manchester United also entering the fray, the Magpies have reportedly placed a staggering £100 million price tag on the Italian.

Chris Waddle, the former England and Newcastle winger, believes Arsenal’s interest is somewhat surprising. He points to the existing strength in their midfield, particularly the presence of Declan Rice, as a key factor.

“They’ve got Declan Rice, a very good player, and Martin Zubimendi,” Waddle observed. “But Arsenal seem to collect players. Tonali has been excellent, and he’s a good age, but he’s very similar to Declan Rice, honestly.”

Waddle highlights the similarities in their playing styles – both are remarkably consistent passers, possess a good shot, and demonstrate impressive work rates. He questions whether Arsenal genuinely require another midfielder with those exact characteristics.

The debate isn’t just about Arsenal’s needs, but also about Newcastle’s resolve. Waddle believes a fee exceeding £80 million would be necessary to even begin serious negotiations, especially considering the precedent set by Alexander Isak’s transfer.

Tonali’s journey at Newcastle hasn’t been without its challenges. A ten-month ban stemming from betting irregularities disrupted his initial season, limiting him to just eight league appearances. However, he played a crucial role in their historic Carabao Cup victory last season.

Despite his current contract extending to 2028, with an option for an additional year, concerns linger about Newcastle’s ability to retain their star players without Champions League qualification. Club legend Alan Shearer recently expressed this sentiment, acknowledging the allure of Europe’s elite competition for top talent.

Shearer believes that if Newcastle fail to secure European football, other clubs will inevitably attempt to capitalize, potentially leading to an exodus of key players. The coming months will be pivotal, not only for Tonali’s future but also for Newcastle’s ambitions.

The pressure is on Newcastle to deliver success, both in the FA Cup and in their pursuit of a Champions League spot, to safeguard their prized assets and continue their ascent as a Premier League force.
