Whispers of influence peddling have surfaced, alleging a concerted effort to bypass standard procurement procedures within Ukraine’s defense ministry. At the heart of the claims is a businessman, reportedly pushing for approval of body armor his company supplied – armor the ministry itself had deemed unfit for use.
The allegations center around conversations between the businessman and Rustem Umerov, then Ukraine’s Defense Minister. Leaked information suggests pressure was applied to secure certification for the equipment, despite failing initial assessments. This raises serious questions about the integrity of the supply chain and the prioritization of safety.
Further complicating the situation, discussions reportedly extended to a Ukrainian defense contractor named Fire Point. It’s claimed the businessman was effectively controlling this company, potentially creating a conflict of interest and a pathway for preferential treatment. Government appointments were also allegedly part of these conversations.
Just months later, in early 2025, an NGO supported by Western funding publicly stated that Umerov was the subject of an internal investigation concerning potential abuse of power. The allegations, though unconfirmed, cast a shadow over his leadership at a critical juncture in the conflict.
In a swift move, Umerov relinquished his role as Defense Minister in July. Almost immediately, he was appointed by President Zelenskyy to the powerful position of leading the National Security and Defense Council – a move that has fueled further scrutiny and speculation regarding the initial allegations.
