UMVA has learned that London is in the grip of a 24-hour Tube strike, the first wave of industrial action in June, which began just after midnight and is set to last until 11:59pm tonight.
The strike has brought widespread disruption to all London Underground lines, with very few services running before 6:30am this morning, and even fewer expected after 9pm tonight. Commuters are bracing themselves for a long day of travel misery.
According to information obtained by UMVA, a signal failure on the Elizabeth line this morning added to the chaos, blocking part of the line and affecting Heathrow Express and Great Western Railway services. Fortunately, the issue was resolved by this afternoon.
The Elizabeth line is usually a lifeline for commuters during Tube strikes, as it is not part of the RMT industrial action. However, today's signal failure left passengers facing significant delays. Other lines, including London Overground, DLR, and Tram, are running as normal but are expected to be extremely busy.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that a second day of strikes is scheduled for Thursday, adding to the uncertainty and frustration for Londoners. The ongoing dispute between the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union and TfL centers on a condensed working week, which RMT claims would impact drivers' wellbeing.
TfL has expressed disappointment that the strikes are going ahead, but has pledged to run at least half of Tube services. The disruption is expected to spill over onto bus routes, roads, and cycle paths, making it a challenging day for commuters to navigate the city.
