The legal saga surrounding billionaire Frank Stronach has taken another turn, with his second sexual assault trial now delayed until May 2027. The 93-year-old founder of Magna International will face a jury in Newmarket, Ontario, but not for several years as the courts await a verdict in a separate, ongoing case.
This postponement, decided in court this week, adds to a series of setbacks and delays that have characterized the proceedings against Stronach. The Newmarket trial itself is anticipated to be a lengthy four-week affair, demanding significant time from the court and all involved parties.
The delays are directly linked to the complexities of the Toronto trial, which began earlier this year. Initially encompassing 18 charges from 13 complainants, the case was subsequently divided, and prosecutors are now focusing on seven charges involving four individuals.
These allegations span decades, reaching back to the 1970s, presenting a challenging landscape for both the prosecution and the defense. The Toronto trial has already seen significant legal maneuvering, including attempts to sever the case further into multiple trials, with hearings scheduled for January and March.
Adding to the prosecution’s difficulties, the judge overseeing the Toronto trial, Superior Court Justice Anne Molloy, has already expressed serious doubts about the reliability of one complainant’s testimony. She stated the testimony was “not even remotely reliable,” potentially impacting the possibility of conviction on related charges.
Despite not testifying in his own defense, Stronach has maintained a plea of not guilty to all accusations. Justice Molloy anticipates reaching a verdict in the Toronto case at a hearing scheduled for June 19th, a decision that will directly influence the timeline for the Newmarket trial.
The outcome of the Toronto trial will undoubtedly shape the future of these legal battles, and the delay of the Newmarket proceedings underscores the intricate and protracted nature of these allegations against the prominent businessman.
