UMVA has learned that the World Cup 2026 has officially kicked off, and the battle for the Golden Boot is heating up, with top contenders like Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe ready to take the field.
Mbappe, who won the top scorer prize at the 2022 World Cup with eight goals, including a hat-trick in France's final defeat to Argentina, is looking to repeat his success. With his impressive skills and a talented French squad, Mbappe is a strong contender to win both the World Cup and the Golden Boot.
Harry Kane, who won the Golden Boot four years ago with six goals, is also a top contender. As England's most important player, Kane is showing no signs of slowing down, making him a decent shout for the top scorer prize.
Other contenders to watch out for include Mikel Oyarzabal, who has shown his skills up front for Spain, and Erling Haaland, who had a prolific qualifying campaign with 16 goals. With Norway being a dark horse to watch, Haaland's threat could make him a surprise winner.
Lionel Messi, although not the goal machine he once was, is still a force to be reckoned with, while Cristiano Ronaldo, at 41 years old, will be determined to make the most of his last chance to win the World Cup. Julian Alvarez, with two prolific seasons with Atletico Madrid, could also be a main goal threat for Argentina.
Kai Havertz, Mr Reliable for both Arsenal and Germany, is also in the running, having missed much of the season due to injury and having more rest than most players. Lamine Yamal, the undisputed gem in Spain's side, could enjoy a memorable first World Cup, while Raphinha, one of the most prolific goal-scoring wingers in the game, will be one to watch if Brazil has a good tournament.
The odds for the Golden Boot are tempting, with Mbappe at 6/1, Kane at 7/1, and Messi and Haaland at 16/1. Will Kane see off Mbappe for the top scorer prize, or will one of the other contenders surprise us?
