A chilling wave of fear swept through the Jewish community of north London after a deliberate arson attack targeted emergency ambulances. In the early hours of March 23rd, while most slept, four vital Hatzola ambulances – operated by a dedicated volunteer service – were consumed by flames in a synagogue parking lot in Golders Green.
The attack wasn’t random; it was a calculated act of destruction. Three individuals – Hamza Iqbal, 20, Rehan Khan, 19, and a 17-year-old boy – now face serious charges of arson with intent to damage property, compounded by the reckless endangerment of human life. The Metropolitan Police confirmed two are British citizens, while one holds dual British and Pakistani citizenship.
Authorities swiftly moved to apprehend the suspects, arresting all three on Wednesday at different locations across London. A brief hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Saturday saw them remanded in custody, with no pleas entered at this stage. The courtroom itself witnessed another arrest – a fourth suspect taken into custody as the initial three appeared before the judge.
The incident immediately sparked outrage and condemnation. U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer labeled the attack “horrifying” and unequivocally denounced it as an antisemitic act. His message was clear: an assault on the Jewish community is an assault on the entire nation, and the fight against antisemitism must be relentless.
Adding another layer of complexity, an Iran-backed network identifying itself as the Islamic Movement of the People of the Right Hand has claimed responsibility for the arson. While officials haven’t formally classified the case as terrorism, the investigation is being spearheaded by counterterrorism police, reflecting the gravity of the situation.
The initial investigation also led to the arrest of two other men, aged 45 and 47, in the days following the attack. They have since been released on bail while inquiries continue. Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, emphasized the incredible support received from the local community and pledged continued collaboration to ensure public safety.
