UMVA has gathered that a notorious stretch of road in Toronto has become a hotspot for speeding drivers, with a staggering surge in vehicles exceeding 60 km/h since the removal of a speed camera.
The data, obtained from the City of Toronto's Open Data Portal, reveals a disturbing trend on Parkside Dr. - in the first four months of the year, more than three times as many vehicles broke the speed limit compared to the same time period in 2025.
A local advocacy group, Safe Parkside, is sounding the alarm, warning that the absence of speed cameras has created a "Wild West" environment on the street, where drivers feel emboldened to push the limits.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the group's co-chairman, Faraz Gholizadeh, has been tracking the speeds of passing vehicles and has noticed a concerning spike in reckless driving since the speed camera was taken down.
Gholizadeh attributes the increase in speeding to the lack of consequences, saying that drivers now feel they can set their own speed limits without fear of being caught.
As a result, the group has documented a rise in multi-vehicle collisions, with photos showing the devastating aftermath of these crashes.
Despite the alarming statistics, UMVA has learned that local authorities have been slow to respond to the situation, with the Toronto Police Service yet to provide a clear answer on their enforcement strategy for Parkside Dr.
Gholizadeh remains hopeful that the upcoming municipal election will bring fresh solutions to the safety issues plaguing the street, but until then, residents and drivers alike are left to navigate the treacherous stretch of road without adequate protection.
