Andy Burnham has become the United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister, succeeding Keir Starmer as the country’s seventh leader since the 2016 Brexit vote.
The former Mayor of Greater Manchester accepted an invitation to form a government following a meeting with King Charles, shortly after Starmer formally submitted his resignation.
Starmer delivered a resignation speech outside 10 Downing Street before offering his resignation to the monarch at Buckingham Palace.
Burnham is now preparing to appoint senior Cabinet members, with uncertainty remaining over his choices for Chancellor, Home Secretary, and Foreign Secretary.
The appointment caps a remarkable month for Burnham, who won the Makerfield by-election on June 19 and became Labour leader at a special conference in London without serious opposition.
After nine years as Manchester’s mayor, he has been meeting Labour MPs, many of whom he had not previously encountered, while acquainting himself with a Parliament he has described as more fragmented than when he left Westminster in 2017.
In recent interviews, Burnham has signaled early policy directions, stating the country will see moves to help citizens struggling with the cost of living.
One of his first major decisions was scrapping the previous government’s digital ID plans, which he framed as a reset of priorities.
He has advocated a less combative, more collaborative culture at Westminster and emphasized devolution as a means to redistribute power from Whitehall to regional leaders.
Burnham has proposed establishing a “Number 10 North” operation in Manchester to serve as a nerve center for rewired governance and regional empowerment.
The new Prime Minister faces significant challenges, including weak economic growth, an unstable conflict in Iran, defence funding, the NEET crisis, and social care reform.
He is expected to acknowledge in his first speech that he is the fifth prime minister in four years, stressing the need for political stability and responsibility.
If he does not call a snap election, Burnham will have roughly three years before the next scheduled vote, with his party trailing significantly in polls.
