The International Criminal Court's (ICC) chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, is facing serious allegations of sexual harassment and abuse of power. A 21-member bureau investigating the claims has concluded that Khan engaged in a sexual relationship with a junior female staffer, constituting sexual harassment and abuse of authority.
The report detailed the disturbing allegations, stating that Khan would "grab and paw at her breasts, try to access her pelvic area, and suck on her neck." The bureau found that Khan pressured the staffer into sex, taking advantage of a blatant power imbalance. He later attempted to dissuade her from pursuing misconduct claims against him.
Khan was given 30 opportunities to deny the allegations but failed to clearly do so. His main concern was whether the woman might have made recordings implicating him. Only after it became clear no recordings existed did he offer denials, which the report deemed "devoid of credibility." At least two-thirds of the bureau members found his credibility lacking.
Khan strongly denies all the allegations against him, with his lawyers claiming the decision is "illegal, procedurally unfair, and not supported by evidence." He has been on voluntary leave since last May and is under review by the independent legal regulator in the United Kingdom, which will determine his professional future in the coming weeks.
A crucial vote on Khan's dismissal is scheduled for July 24 in New York City, where the assembly of 125 member states will convene. A qualified majority of at least 63 countries is required to carry out the dismissal. The court has clarified that even if Khan is dismissed, it will have no impact on the arrest warrants he issued.
This development is particularly significant given Khan's previous actions as chief prosecutor. In May 2024, he announced the ICC's application for arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza starting October 8, 2023.
Khan's future at the ICC hangs in the balance, and the outcome of the vote on July 24 will determine his professional fate. The allegations against him have raised serious questions about his credibility and the ICC's handling of the situation.
