A valuable travel perk is quietly disappearing. Starting June 30th, American Express Membership Rewards points will no longer transfer to Etihad Guest, a loyalty program favored by savvy travelers seeking exceptional value.
For years, this 1:1 transfer ratio unlocked access to Etihad Airways’ renowned luxury, particularly its coveted A380 Apartment – a truly spacious and opulent experience in commercial aviation. Beyond Etihad, the program offered redemption opportunities across a network of partners like American Airlines, Air Canada, and others.
While current global events might shift travel priorities, the Etihad Guest program has consistently provided a strategic pathway to book American Airlines flights using American Express points. Despite no direct transfer to American Airlines AAdvantage, a clever codeshare agreement allowed for earning and redeeming miles across both programs.
The benefit resonated even for frequent domestic flyers. Consider a quick trip between Philadelphia and Florida – a route often booked for just 12,000 Etihad Guest miles plus minimal taxes and fees, a significant savings compared to cash prices.
If you’ve been planning an Etihad Guest redemption, time is of the essence. The window to transfer American Express Membership Rewards points closes on June 29th. Don’t delay if you want to secure those miles for future travel.
After the cutoff, you can still utilize your Amex points towards Etihad flights through the “Pay with Points” feature on Amex Travel. However, anticipate a reduced value compared to a direct points transfer. It’s a fallback option, but not the optimal one.
The good news? Etihad Guest remains a transfer partner for other major rewards programs. Bilt, Capital One, and Citi ThankYou Rewards will continue to offer a 1:1 transfer ratio, providing alternative avenues to access this valuable loyalty program.
