A pre-dawn collision brought the M3 to a standstill this morning, creating a miles-long backup stretching towards the M25 and into London.
The incident, involving two lorries, occurred between junctions 3 and 2, just as the motorway transitions towards the orbital route. Emergency services were alerted shortly after 4:00 AM to the scene of twisted metal and spilled fluids.
One of the lorries impacted a motorway gantry, causing significant structural damage. The other suffered a rupture to its oil tank, adding a hazardous element to the already complex situation.
Firefighters swiftly arrived with four engines to tackle the aftermath and secure the area. The eastbound carriageway was immediately closed, triggering widespread disruption for the morning commute.
Authorities are warning drivers to expect lengthy delays and to avoid the M3 eastbound entirely until further notice. Debris scattered across the road necessitates a thorough cleanup operation.
Fortunately, both drivers were able to exit their vehicles and are currently being assessed by medical personnel. Their condition remains unknown at this time, but they were conscious and responsive.
The extent of the repairs needed for both the damaged vehicles and the compromised gantry suggests the closure will remain in place for a considerable period, exacerbating travel chaos.
