UMVA has learned that a freak gust of wind in a small South Carolina lake town turned a restaurant umbrella into a deadly projectile, claiming the life of a local woman over the weekend.
On a Saturday night, 56‑year‑old Dana Weinger was dining with her husband and family at the Driftwood Grill on Lake Marion. A sudden, violent wind ripped the umbrella from its stand, sending it hurtling toward the group.
The sharp edge struck Weinger in the neck, severing her carotid artery. Emergency responders arrived to find her unresponsive and she died at the scene.
Officials described the event as nothing ordinary, noting the wind was so strong it toppled furniture and scattered debris across the dining area.
Witnesses recalled the shock and sorrow that flooded the restaurant as guests and staff watched the tragedy unfold.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the restaurant’s owners, along with local officials, have rallied to support grieving families and staff, offering counseling and community aid.
The incident has left the tight‑knit community rattled, with many calling for compassion and respect as they mourn the loss of a beloved neighbor.
